The Sturgis volleyball team earned a nice win on the road at Vicksburg on Wednesday.

The Lady Trojans won in four sets, claiming the first two 25-17 and 25-20. Vicksburg was able to win the third set, a close one at 26-24, before Sturgis put the match away with a 25-17 win in the fourth.

SHS head coach Tracy Sterling said some things went against the Lady Trojans in the middle of the match, but they were able to get it figured out.

“Vicksburg served well against us and had us off our game in streaks,” she said. “The third set was a mix of things going wrong on our side. The biggest issue was communication and passing. Both issues were adjusted in game four.”

Sturgis has been busy with quite a bit of volleyball to this point in the season.

The win on Wednesday closes out their pre-Labor Day part of the schedule and they won’t be back on the court for a match until next Thursday at home against Plainwell. It’s a nice break for the Lady Trojans and winning in the final match before the brief match pause is a positive.

“They ladies have played lots of volleyball in the last week and have started to find that push needed to close out games,” Sterling said.

The Lady Trojans have dealt with some adversity as well. Senior Ashley Sutter is now out for the season with a knee injury, junior Adison Nettleman boogered up her ankle in a match last week, but returned last night.

Jillian Romanyk, who suffered some life-altering injuries in a vehicle crash earlier this summer, was also in attendance for the Lady Trojans on Wednesday. Her infectious smile and positive attitude could be seen on the sidelines behind the Sturgis bench in Vicksburg.

Sturgis also got some quality time from a pair of youngsters on Wednesday.

“I am very happy with how much support we are getting from our underclassmen Angela Cary and Keyanna O'Tey,” she said. “They are quickly picking up our faster offense and providing key blocks that change the course of the game. It is so exciting to see them growing in confidence and skill. The team is uniting and growing together as a whole.”

Cary finished with seven kills and three blocks, O’Tey totaled four kills with two blocks.

Nettleman led the team, she posted 15 kills with five aces, four assists and 10 digs while Megan Hecht added up 11 kills with four blocks and two aces. Harlie Blum passed out 34 assists. Blum totaled 13 digs, three aces and three kills as well while Taylor Miller recorded six kills with 11 digs and three aces.

The Lady Eddies won the opening and fourth set by the same 25-19 scores. TR won in between there at 25-23 and 26-24. In the fifth and final set, Three Rivers picked up a 15-11 victory.
