PHILIPPI — The Dr. Robert V. Digman Lecture Series is a long-standing tradition of homecoming at Alderson Broaddus University. Linda R. Shearer ’76 will speak on Friday, Sept. 30 at noon in the Crim Dining Hall with a lecture entitled, “Life After AB.”

Shearer attended Alderson Broaddus College from 1972 to 1976, was a member of the Debate Team and Chi Sigma Nu, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in education specializing in English, Speech, and Drama. She attended California University of Pennsylvania from 1976 to 1979, receiving a Master’s Degree in Education as a Reading Specialist.

She was employed by the Connellsville Area School District for 39 years and retired in 2014. She taught English and Public Speaking during her employment and sponsored the Tri Hi Y, The National Honor Society, Senior Class, Yearbook, and other activities.

With the attack on 9/11, she began a volunteer group to promote patriotism. In 2004 the group was recognized by Fox News in a documentary entitled “A Christmas Tribute to the Troops.” After battling cancer, she incorporated the group so they could continue if she couldn’t. She has received many recognitions, including Fayette County Teacher of the Year twice, 2008-09 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year by the VFW, and The Jefferson Award in 2017 for outstanding public service.

She believes her most outstanding recognition came in 2010 when she and her Patriots were chosen as one of 1100 groups from around the world to receive an artifact from the destroyed Twin Towers. That four-ton piece of steel is on display in the foyer of the Connellsville Area Senior High School to remind everyone of the tragic events of 9/11.

Shearer believes that teaching was her act of reverence and wants everyone to remember that freedom matters!

The Dr. Robert V. Digman Lecture Series honors Dr. Digman for his outstanding service to Alderson Broaddus University. He devoted his life to the institution, its students. The lecture series highlights outstanding alumni in their various fields of work and personal accomplishments.
