Hempel has launched a new hydrocarbon passive fire protection (PFP) coating, Hempafire XTR 100, for downstream oil and gas assets.

Claimed to be an epoxy intumescent coating, Hempafire XTR 100 insulates steel in the event of a hydrocarbon pool fire, thereby extending the load-bearing capacity of the steel for up to four hours. This in turn helps fire-fighting teams to have more time to safely evacuate personnel and protect valuable assets and equipment.

Fires can be disastrous at oil and gas facilities as the damage can cost millions of dollars.

This coating is designed for oil and gas segments such as refining and petrochemical facilities.

The new product offers UL 1709-certified fire protection at low dry film thicknesses, which means less PFP is required, thereby cutting down application time and total project costs for asset owners, operators, and applicators.

Hempel global product manager for hydrocarbon PFP Christopher Martyn said: “Our customers tell us that PFP coatings can be difficult and time-consuming to apply. Hempafire XTR 100 overcomes these issues. It is a lightweight PFP coating and is applied at low dry film thicknesses to meet the fire protection requirements of a project, which reduces the amount of PFP needed.

“This lowers the total applied weight per square metre, bringing additional benefits by making transportation and construction easier and lowering overall project costs. To simplify project complexity for customers, Hempafire XTR 100 can be applied to both stick-build and modular constructions, and it only requires mesh reinforcement around section flanges.”

Martyn further added: “Hempafire XTR 100 also aids high productivity. A two hour Hempafire XTR 100 system can be applied in one working day and the coated sections can be moved the next day. This enables applicators to increase productivity, especially when applying the product in-shop.”

Available in several markets across the globe, Hempafire XTR 100 can be applied to modular and stick-build structural steel, pipe racks, and vessel supports.

Due to the durability and impact resistance, the product ensures minimum long-term maintenance.

The lightweight product is also claimed to reduce transportation and construction costs.
